Module 4 - Process Design and Improvement Abstract
This module presents a case study for designing a sustainable manufacturing process with continuous improvement. The case study used is the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance “World Engine.” Alternative methods for waste and energy reduction are discussed both those that were implemented and those that were found to be either unprofitable or infeasible. The module focuses on these five topics:
Definition of Wastes/Waste Streams
Waste Stream Audit/Pollution prevention
Implementing Environmental Considerations
Packaging Challenges
Energy Assessments/Audit
Additional Material Available
- A complete set of PowerPoint lectures with an in depth case study
- An assignment for an waste audit
- An assignment for an energy audit
- Links to related online material
The National Science Foundation financially supported the project with a three-year CCLI grant DUE#0511322.
